The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning and a freeze warning for Corpus Christi and the surrounding area from 9 pm Thursday, January 20th until noon on Friday, the 21st. NEC members are urged to prepare now for this winter weather. Freezing rain, sleet, and light snow is expected for some NEC members with this system. These can cause power outages and some may last for an extended period. If there is a member of your household who depends upon a life support system, prepare now to use your back up plans for a power supply to ensure the safety of that family member.
Area residents should plan on slippery road conditions which could impact the morning commute on Friday. The cold wind chills as low as 20 degrees could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Be prepared for winter weather at home, at work and in your car.
- Create an emergency supply kit for your car. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water and non-perishable snacks.
- Keep a full tank of gas.
- Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
- To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly.
- Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
- Keep out the cold with insulation, caulking and weather stripping.
- Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups.
- Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for an extended period without power.
- Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication.
- Remember the needs of your pets.
- Have extra batteries for radios and flashlights.
