Our Work in Guatemala
What does it look like when light meets hope? For three Nueces Electric Cooperative employees, it looks like the smiling faces of families watching their homes light up for the very first time.
On November 4th, 2025. Manny P., Robert H. and Oscar M. packed their bags and traveled nearly 1,500 miles south to Guatemala. They joined sister electric cooperatives from across South Texas to bring electricity to a small, rural village that has never had power before.
Working through NRECA International, NEC joined Victoria Electric Cooperative, San Patricio Electric Cooperative, Karnes Electric Cooperative, Medina Electric Cooperative, among others, on a mission that goes far beyond poles and wires. Together, they’re building a brighter future, one connection, one lightbulb, and one smile at a time.
From South Texas to the Hills of Guatemala
The terrain is steep. The days are long. The heat is relentless. But the purpose keeps them moving. They made it safely and are already working hard. Line workers Manny and Robert are hard at work setting poles and stringing new line across the village. Meanwhile, Oscar, from NEC’s metering department, is applying his expertise to help ensure each home and community building is safely connected and ready for use.
Access to power will change daily life in countless ways, opening many doors for education, safety and growth in this colonia in Guatemala.
"It's amazing what can happen when people come together to serve," said NEC CEO Varzavand "Avan" Irani. "Eighty-seven years ago, Nueces Electric Cooperative was founded to bring power to rural South Texas communities that others overlooked. Today, our employees are continuing that legacy on an international level. We are extending the same spirit of service to those in need."
Lighting Lives, Changing Futures
As photos come in from the field, you’ll see the story unfold. You will see crews working side by side, sharing in the joy of bringing light to a new community. While our team is far from home, we know they will be working safely and diligently, representing our cooperative with pride and professionalism.
We’re proud to support this mission and the many sister cooperatives who stand beside us in this effort.
