The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, a freeze watch, a wind chill watch, and a wind advisory for the members in the NEC area in South Texas. NEC members are urged to prepare now for this winter weather. Freezing rain and sleet is possible for some NEC members with this system. These can cause power outages, some which may last for an extended period. If there is a member of your household who depends on a life support system, prepare now to ready your back up plans for a power supply to ensure the safety of that family member.
Area residents should plan on slippery road conditions which could impact evening and morning drives. The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frost and freeze conditions may kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Remember the 4 P’s
- Plants: Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
- Pipes: To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Also, those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
- People: Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication and check on elderly family members, friends and neighbors.
- Pets: Remember the needs of your pets. Bring them indoors when possible.
NEC power line members who experience outages are encouraged to report them to NEC right away by calling 800-632-9288.
