Electricity powers our lives and makes daily tasks easier. Yet, mishandling electricity can lead to many safety risks such as fires, electrocution, and appliance damage. Follow these easy safety tips for secure electricity use and peace of mind:

Around the House: Our daily routines are intertwined with many electrical devices:

  • Inspect cords regularly for damage.
  • Use outlet covers, especially with young children around.
  • Keep appliances away from water sources.
  • Avoid overloading outlets and use surge protectors.
  • Unplug unused appliances to reduce fire risk.
  • Use appliances as intended and keep flammable items away from heat sources.
  • Install and regularly test smoke detectors.

Plan Your Housework: Awareness of your home's electrical infrastructure can prevent accidents:

  • Know where electrical lines run before digging.
  • Call before digging to mark underground utilities: Homepage - Texas 811
  • Keep trees trimmed away from power lines.
  • Report any issues with power lines immediately.
  • Practice safe DIY by turning off power and using insulated tools.
  • Wear protective gear like rubber-soled shoes and gloves.
  • Educate your family on electrical safety basics.

Avoid Power Lines:

  • Look up!
  • Maintain a safe distance of at least 10 feet from power lines.
  • Never touch downed power lines and report them immediately.
  • Exercise caution with wet or dirty ladders.
  • Keep kites and activities away from power lines.
  • Avoid climbing trees near power lines.
  • Respect barriers and signs, especially near substations.

Avoid Danger Zones:

  • Stay indoors during storms to avoid potential hazards.
  • Report and avoid flooded areas to prevent electrocution.
  • Wait for authorities' clearance after a storm before going outside.
  • Leave debris removal near power lines to professionals.
  • Educate yourself on power outage safety protocols.
  • Avoid touching metal fences near downed lines.
  • Keep a safe distance from transformers and substations.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safer home environment for your family. Remember, safety starts with awareness and proactive management of electrical systems. Stay safe!
