Educational Field Trips & Career Exploration

Bring the world of electricity to life at Nueces Electric Cooperative!

Nueces Electric Cooperative (NEC) welcomes local schools to visit our Cooperative and learn more about electricity, electrical safety, energy resources, and the people who help keep our communities powered.

Educational field trips are ideally suited for 4th-grade students and above. NEC also welcomes high school students for shorter, career-focused visits designed to introduce students to the electric utility industry and the variety of career opportunities available as they prepare for life after graduation.

What Students Can Experience

Depending on the age of the students and time available, a visit may include:

  • An introduction to electricity, energy resources, and how power reaches homes and businesses
  • Electrical safety education and demonstrations
  • A tour of the Cooperative
  • A lineman demonstration and introduction to utility safety equipment
  • Information about electric cooperatives and how they serve their communities
  • Energy efficiency and conservation education
  • Interactive activities, when time allows
  • Pizza lunch or snacks, depending on the school’s schedule and visit timeframe

High School Career Exploration

For high school groups, NEC can provide a shorter, career-focused experience introducing students to the electric utility industry and career pathways within a cooperative. Students can learn more about the work involved in providing safe and reliable electric service and gain exposure to an industry that offers a variety of career opportunities.

Scheduling a Visit

NEC hosts one school visit per day, with visits available between 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The agenda can be shortened or adjusted based on the school’s available timeframe and the age of participating students.

A typical visit may include:

Welcome & Energy Education → Electrical Safety Demonstration → Cooperative Tour → Lineman Demonstration → Student Activity → Wrap-Up & Departure
